I was surprised and disappointed to see that the underpass at 47th Street was completely whitewashed [Chicago Antisocial, September 29], but I couldn’t help wondering if it was because of something I had seen there earlier in the summer, which really shocked, scared, and sickened me. It was an illustration under the title “Kill Whitey,” which depicted someone literally blowing someone’s head apart with a gun. It was obviously not part of the approved artwork, but it was well done–ironically, white paint or chalk on a black background. I couldn’t believe my eyes, and I never felt quite comfortable in that underpass after that. I was amazed that it remained up there for months, until the whitewashing. On the one hand, it’s nice that it’s gone, but if this is the reason they painted over everything, I think they threw the baby out
