When corporate litigator Paige Ormond adopted her cat two years ago, she says he was the ugliest one in the whole place–he smelled bad and was missing half his fur. But, she says, “I’m a sucker for the animal that nobody will take.” After about a year of visits to a vet and a dermatologist, she figured out what was wrong: Oscar had a food allergy. “I had such a hard time trying to feed him,” she says. “I thought, ‘There’s got to be a place for people that have cats or dogs with food allergies or other problems.’”
Special treats include organic ice cream in six flavors by local doggie bakery KC Goodies ($1.75 for a tiny cup); baked goods by another local outfit, Galloping Gourmutts, in flavors such as peanut butter cup and s’mores (75 cents to $2); and frozen raw bones–literally hunks of meat on a bone, so dogs get the marrow too ($4 to $28). Doggy Style also carries hemp collars and rope chews, organic cotton toys, squeakers outfitted with dog whistles so that the noise doesn’t drive you crazy, and little outfits, including rocker tees. For cats she has toys made of hemp fabric and twine filled with organic catnip and litter made from corncobs and herbs.
