Go take a look at local band My Were They’s MySpace page. You may notice something’s missing. Down on the left they give you the option of listing your band’s influences or giving a “Sounds Like” description, neither of which My Were They have chosen to do. For a band like theirs, filling in either of them would be a sticky proposition, because My Were They is only trying to sound like Interpol. It is hard to hammer this point home enough: they sound exactly like a band trying to sound exactly like Interpol. If you have doubts about this, listen to this. I’ve heard yuppies commenting on it, and I’m sure even dogs are intelligent enough to pick up on the similarities.
- After hatching such unviable offspring as the Editors and She Wants Revenge, is the Interpol “influence” reaching its evolutionary dead end? Or is it more like genital warts and DJs who can’t do blends–something that’ll plague the scene for the forseeable future?
